Bren Underditch collects the King's taxes, and he's the only man in Dragsbat who thinks that's something to be proud of.
He came up out of the Underditch with nothing, and the tin badge on his chest is proof that a boy off the worst street in the city can end up on the right side of the line. Then he stops a wagon on the north road, finds something in it that a lord would rather he hadn't, and by the next morning he's been dismissed, warned off, and the only witness has been quietly murdered in a Watch House cell.
Bren has no badge now, no authority and nothing much to lose. What he has is three friends: a card-playing highwayman with a price on a name he never says aloud, a dwarf who cares about sausages, ale and family in an order that shifts, and a mage who is beginning to hear something in the walls of the city that nobody else can.
There's a plague in the poor quarters' wells. There's a church nobody important has bothered to notice. And in three days the whole of Dragsbat will crowd into one square for the Festival of Dromae.
They have that long to find out what's coming.
Not all of them will want to stop it.
