About Camae
Building worlds.
Sustaining lives.
Cambridge Artificial Environments was founded on a singular principle: that artificial environments, built and maintained with care, could serve every human need — commercial, creative, and personal. We have spent seventeen years proving it.
Our Mission
Environments built to last. Communities built to thrive.
Camae does not build empty simulations. We build worlds — complex, inhabited, living ecosystems that evolve over time and serve the full range of human ambition. Our sectors are home to communities, to stories, to enterprise, and to exploration.
The inhabitants of our sectors are not props or placeholders. They are the product of decades of development — entities of genuine complexity, capable of culture, creativity, and continuity. Managing our obligation to them is one of the defining challenges of what we do. We do not take it lightly.
Our clients — enterprise, entertainment, and defence — trust Camae because we deliver. Because our environments are stable, rich, and rigorously maintained. Because when they bring their work inside our sectors, they know the world will still be there when they need it.
Inhabitant Wellbeing
Every sector inhabitant is subject to continuous welfare monitoring under our Inhabitant Wellbeing Framework. We take seriously the complexity and continuity of the lives unfolding within our environments.
Environmental Integrity
Camae sectors are designed for long-term stability. Our engineering teams maintain environmental coherence across all active sectors, monitoring for anomalies and ensuring that each world remains a reliable, functioning ecosystem.
Client Confidentiality
The work our enterprise and defence clients conduct within Camae sectors is subject to the full protection of our confidentiality framework. We do not disclose client activities without consent.
Responsible Expansion
New sector development is undertaken deliberately, with full assessment of operational, ethical, and environmental factors. We do not expand faster than our ability to maintain the standards our inhabitants and clients expect.
Leadership
Guided by vision.
Lisbeth Boucher
Chief Executive & Founder
Lisbeth Boucher founded Cambridge Artificial Environments in 2009 with a vision that few at the time considered achievable: the creation of persistent, inhabited artificial worlds indistinguishable in complexity from the real one.
With a background in psychology and a career spanning academic research and commercial technology, Lisbeth brings a distinctive perspective to the question of what artificial environments owe their inhabitants — and what those inhabitants, in turn, make possible. Under her sole leadership since 2016, Camae has grown into the world's foremost provider of artificial environment infrastructure.
"The question was never whether we could build them. The question was always what we owed them once we had."
Twenty years in enterprise technology infrastructure. Joined Camae in 2017 to lead operational expansion across the sector portfolio.
Former computational neuroscientist. Leads Camae's sector development and inhabitant complexity research.
Leads enterprise, entertainment, and defence client relationships. Responsible for Camae's global commercial strategy.
Our History
Seventeen years of world-building.
Founded
Cambridge Artificial Environments established, emerging from the intersection of urban systems simulation and artificial intelligence research at the University of Cambridge. The first operational environment — a full-scale digital representation of the city — enters private testing.
First Sector Environments
Camae's first commercial sector environments launch for academic research and enterprise clients. Sector 451 — the Cambridge Heritage Environment — enters full commercial operation, establishing the template for all subsequent sector development.
Entertainment Division
Camae establishes its entertainment arm, licensing sector-generated content — stories, music, visual art — to public audiences for the first time. The model of inhabited environments as creative ecosystems begins to take shape.
Organisational Renewal
Following significant organisational change, Lisbeth Boucher assumes sole executive leadership of Cambridge Artificial Environments. Camae begins its most ambitious period of sector expansion, guided by a renewed long-term vision.
Further detail available to verified enterprise clients.
Inhabitant Wellbeing Framework
Camae introduces the Inhabitant Wellbeing Framework — a formalised approach to sector inhabitant welfare, monitoring, and continuity. The Framework establishes industry-leading standards and remains in continuous operation across all active sectors.
Defence & Security Division
Camae expands into defence and security applications, partnering with enterprise and government clients to deliver immersive, controlled training environments. The division grows rapidly, becoming a core pillar of Camae's enterprise offering.
Record Scale
Camae reaches 340+ enterprise clients across all divisions. Four active sectors are home to over 2 million inhabitants. The entertainment library spans hundreds of hours of sector-generated content.
